Musicians

Do artists get paid?
Fête de la Musique Brisbane is a non-profit event committed to providing a public platform for all musicians: performances are unpaid.

Where is Fête de la Musique Brisbane?
As many places as possible throughout Brisbane! Shopping Malls, parks, street corners, front yards, cafe’s – wherever we can find a spot, we’d love to have a musician or band or choir perform.

Do I have to apply to be a part of it?
Yes! You simply register all of your details (either as a performer, a volunteer or a venue) through this website. (Event volunteers are not performers, they will be helping out the events team to spread the word and keep the event running on the day).

What if I register to perform but miss out on a venue?
You could also register your workplace, school or backyard as a venue (of course checking with owners, neighbours and managers that this is fine) and then program yourself at your very own Fête de la Musique event.

How do I increase my chances of being programmed?
Due to sound and technical restrictions at many venues, acoustic musicians (i.e. requiring no power or amplification) and those with a simple technical setup will have more chance of being programmed. Having few restrictions on your availability to perform will also increase your chance of securing a performance slot. You may also wish to develop and register your own Fête de la Musique event and program yourself.

Is backline provided for Fête de la Musique Brisbane?
On some stages, yes – and on some, no.

It is important that you clearly outline your technical requirements in your profile when you register. Venues will be able to see your specifications and you will be programmed according to those specs so please ensure they are correct and clear.

Where you are positioned within the programme for the day will be based on your sound, production values, and our alignment with the charter to present as much music outside of ‘normal’ stages as possible.

Can I sell my CDs if I perform in the event?
Sure – after your performance and without disrupting the next artist – including being clear of the stage for sound or line-checks, if applicable. You also just need to flag this with the venue you’re performing at to make sure they approve. The responsibility for the transactions, including provision of floats, cash and security of your merchandise remains entirely with you.

Is busking allowed?
No. Collecting any type of performance fee is against the charter of the event. If you’re busking, you’re busking – you’re not part of Fête de la Musique Brisbane.

Can I publicise other gigs while part of Fete?
Of course! It is in your interest to use the performance to let your fans know about up-coming gigs. However, certain venues have strict guidelines regarding the distribution of marketing material, please check in with the venue you are performing at to make sure they are ok with you promoting other gigs.

I’m not a musician so am I still able to be involved?
Fête de la Musique is a day for people who love playing music whether they’re amateurs, professionals or anything in between. If you’re not a musician but still want to be involved then consider volunteering. Let us know if you’re interested in becoming a volunteer.

Venues

What do I need to provide?
Registering as a Fete venue means that you offer a location for musicians to play. While it is not compulsory, some venues will provide power, production and promotional support for musicians. We also encourage you to provide refreshments, a place to store equipment and a place to prepare if possible.

Does a venue attract a fee for being a part of the event?
No. The venue participates in the event in the same spirit of participation as the musicians. Venues must provide whatever level of production they choose to provide, whether it be space, electricity or more sophisticated staging and sound, free of charge to the artists and general public. No financial assistance is provided to the venue for this.

Can the venue charge a fee for admittance to events listed as part of the Fête de la Musique Brisbane programme?
Absolutely not. Please read the International Charter for the event to gain a clearer understanding of the aims behind this event.

Do musicians get paid?
No, all musicians wishing to be a part of the event do so in the international spirit of presentation and appreciation of music.

Do venues have to apply to be a part of it?
Yes. You need to complete the registration form to be included as part of the event.

Are there set hours for the Fête?
No, but all performances relating to the Fête must take place on June 21.

Do venues provide their own artists?
You may select your own artists or have a Fête de la Musique team member develop a program for you. A member of the Fête team will be in touch with you about your requirements.

Do I have to provide security or a lock-up for artist’s gear?
No. It will be the musicians’ responsibility to load in their gear and load it out again immediately after their performance. If you do choose to take responsibility for a musicians’ gear it will be at your discretion and under your own liability.

Can musicians sell their CDs if they perform in my venue?
Sure – after their performance and without disrupting the next artist – including being clear of the stage for sound or line-checks, if applicable. The responsibility for the transactions, including provision of floats, cash and security of your merchandise, remains entirely with the musician. We have suggested that all artists check in with the venues about this before the event day.

Can I publicise other gigs while part of Fête?
Of course! It is in your interest to use the performance to let your audience know about up-coming gigs.
