What is Fête de la Musique?

Fête de la Musique is the largest international live music event in the world! Developed by the French Government in 1982, Fête is held in 450 cities across the globe on the very same day each year – 21 June. The aim of the event is to make music everywhere, to celebrate music and to expose as many people to music as possible.

An International Charter is the common link for more than 110 countries that participate in this music event. Musicians and venues donate their time for free, supported by a small army of volunteers, all in the spirit of making and celebrating music.

Now in its fifth year, Fête de la Musique Brisbane provides a performance platform for all people who love making music: whether a professional musician who has been playing for years or an aspiring performer who is looking for a chance to try out their skills.

In 2011, a choir and percussion group belted out tunes on the Goodwill Bridge, a West End hair salon threw a late night party, rock bands performed in galleries, in a children’s hospital and in malls. The Old Museum hosted a picnic lunch with live music, school children took over the State Library of Queensland, musicians performed on buses, CityCats and train stations, and waltzed down the aisles of churches and cathedrals, and late night valley venues rocked out – all in the name of making music everywhere!

International Charter

Fête de la Musique is presented across the world within the framework of an international charter. Provided by the French Government, the charter assists all of the cities and countries involved by providing clear guidelines for performers, venues, and presenters. It ensures the flexibility and uniqueness of Fête de la Musique in each city.

The Charter:

1. Fête de la Musique takes place every year on 21 June.

2. Fête de la Musique is a live music celebration which highlights the diversity of musical practices in all the musical genres.

3. Fête de la Musique appeals to spontaneity and free participation, open to individuals or ensembles (instrumental or singing) and musical institutions to give both amateurs and professionals the opportunity to express their musical talent.

4. All concerts are free to the public. The co-organisers are in charge of promoting musical practice and live music with no profit-making intention.

5. Fête de la Musique is an exceptional day for all types of music and public.

6. Fête de la Musique is as often as possible an outdoor event taking place in streets, squares, public parks, playgrounds etc. Indoor venues may also be used as long as they respect the rule of free entry to the public. Fête de la Musique is the opportunity to access and open places which are not traditionally concert venues to the public: museums, hospitals, public buildings…
